Main Sources of Finance for Postgraduate Study and Research

Students - This is a general guide only.  Individual arrangements may vary from year to year.  Discuss possible funding with the department in which you wish to study in the first instance.  

Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC): Agriculture, Food and Biological Sciences and other related physical sciences with some engineering.

Complete: return to head of PG department for onward transmission to BBSRC by 31st July Decisions, as soon as possible, usually by September.
British Academy (BA): Humanities but beware of borderline subjects. BA 
Forms available from institutions in February.  You need to have an offer of a place before you can apply
Complete first part of form, pass form to referees who pass it to intended PG department for completion and submission to BA by 1st May Degree results to British Academy June/July.  Decisions, as soon as possible, usually August but possibly September.
Department for Education (DfE): Designated taught courses for a vocational or professional nature. DfE 
Request forms from Head of nominating PG department
Complete: return to head of PG department for onward transmission to DfE by 1st June 
For librarianship 31st May 
For information science 1st August
Degree results to DfE, if applicable, June/July.  Decisions, as soon as possible, usually July/August.
Economics and Social Research Council (ESRC): Social Science but beware of borderline subjects.  ESRC 
Competition award forms available from academic departments in February.  You need an offer of a place to apply.  Quota awards nominated by PG department who send for to you
Completed forms must be submitted by PG department to ESRC - competition awards by 1st May.  Most quota awards by 1st June, Housing Management & Health Economics by 6th June. STIS advanced coupe studentships by 31st July Degree results to ESRC June/July.  Decisions, as soon as possible, usually August.
Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC): Engineering, Physical Sciences and Information Technology. EPSRC

Complete: return to head of PG department for onward transmission to EPSRC by 31st July Decisions, as soon as possible, usually August.
Local Education Authority (LEA): Range of subject areas - normally vocational- all grants are discretionary except PGCE. LEA 
Forms for your home LEA i.e.. from where you received your undergraduate grant unless you have moved to a new area recently
Complete: return to LEA.  No national closing date but aim for March Decisions made as soon as possible.
Medical Research Council (MRC): Biomedical Research areas. MRC

Complete: return to head of PG department for onward transmission to MRC by 31st  July Decisions, as soon as possible, usually by September.
Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF): Agricultural Sciences, Agricultural Economics, Food Science. MAFF

Complete: return to head of PG department for onward transmission to MAFF by 31st  July Decisions, as soon as possible, usually by August.
Natural Environment Research Council (NERC): Geological Sciences, Earth Sciences, Aquatic Life Sciences. NERC

Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC): Astronomy, Particle Physics and Solar Systems Science. PPARC
